Residents taken to hospital after house fire in Whitley Bay

A number of residents have been taken to hospital following a fire at a home in Whitley Bay.

Firefighters were called to a blaze at a property on Belmont Avenue at around 9.34am on Sunday, April 24 and spent nearly two hours tackling the flames. Two people who lived at the house were taken by ambulance to the Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital in Cramlington with minor injuries.

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service said confirmed that the cause of the fire is under investigation. Four fire engines from Byker and Tynemouth were in attendance during the incident, along with medics from the North East Ambulance Service and the gas board.

A Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "We received a report of a fire on Belmont Avenue, Whitley Bay, at 9.30am.

"Four appliances from Tynemouth and Byker were in attendance and arrived on scene at 9.34am. North East Ambulance Service attended and first aid was given at the scene. Casualties were taken to hospital in Cramlington. The stop message was at 11.15am."

A North East Ambulance Service spokeswoman confirmed that two people were taken to hospital.

"We received a call to 999 at 9.35am this morning to a house fire at a private address on Belmont Avenue in Whitley Bay," they said.

"We sent a Hazardous Area Response Team, an emergency ambulance crew and an officer. We transported two patients to Cramlington hospital with minor injuries."
