Residents rescued from window of first floor of block of flats after terrifying County Durham blaze

Residents were saved from a block of flats after a bin store fire spread to the property above in County Durham.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene following reports that a fire at a bin store had spread at a block of flats in Ashfield, Newton Aycliffe, just after 2am this morning (August 11).

Officers from both the County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service and Durham Constabulary attended the scene where residents had to be brought to safety following the terrifying blaze.

The brigade confirmed that two people were rescued from the window first floor of the block of flats.

Thankfully no is believed to have been seriously injured and a joint investigation is set to be launched to ascertain the circumstances of the fire.

A police cordon was put in place at the block of flats following the blaze.

A County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson, commented: “Three fire crews responded to reports of a fire in a bin store, at a house in Ashfield, Newton Aycliffe, the early hours of this morning (Thursday, August 11).

"On arrival, it was clear the fire was spreading to the property above and two occupants were rescued from a first floor window, fortunately unharmed.

“At present the cause of the fire is unknown and a joint investigation with Durham Constabulary is underway.”

A spokesperson from Durham Constabulary confirmed the attendance of their officers and urged people not to speculate as to the circumstances while the joint investigation takes place.

They added: "We were called to reports of a fire in a bin store at a block of flats in Ashfield, Newton Aycliffe, just after 2am this morning (August 11). Officers supported colleagues at County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service to get residents to safety."

"Thankfully no is believed to have been seriously injured and a joint investigation will be carried out to ascertain the circumstances. In the meantime, we would encourage people not to speculate as to the circumstances."
