Residents have taken to social media to complain after spotting a sign warning of roadworks in Altrincham planned for over SIX MONTHS.
The works, which the council say will also benefit active travel through new cycle lanes, will be delivered in two phases with George Street in the town being resurfaced and Regent Road becoming one way. New trees will be planted on George Street along with sustainable drainage and green areas and work to Market Street will involve the reversal of the existing one way system.
But some residents are less than impressed with the timescale and after one Facebook user, Alex McCann, posted a picture of the road sign saying work would start on October 24, for 26 weeks, many responded with fury.

Resident David Norfolk said: "Altrincham has been in a state of development for decades. The town has never really got itself together. Another 26 weeks?"
Another user, Jinny Walker-Ellis claimed: "George Street is like Beirut on a good day.. absolutely shocking!!!"
A'Dii Santos posted: "I wonder how much of the roads are going to be closed or if they will be totally closed! I hope not... as this will be an absolutely nightmare as I live in town! Its already bad enough to park."
Tony Cooper asked incredulously: "What they doing re building Altrincham?". While Robert Warburton stated: "Whole centre is now far too cramped and crowded with unnecessary buildings, some open space would have been much better for the town."
Councillor Liz Patel, Trafford Council’s Executive Member for Economy and Regeneration, said: “We are totally committed to improving our town centres and it is great news that the continued work is due to start soon on the next phase of the public realm in Altrincham.
"We consulted with the public on the initial plans and these have been changed in light of the responses that we received. People wanted more trees along Regent Road and new cycle lanes and we have listened.
"These large-scale improvements should further enhance Altrincham’s reputation as a destination in its own right and benefit residents, businesses and visitors alike.”
On hearing about the complaints, a spokesperson for Trafford Council said: “These works are part of our ambitious plans to maintain Altrincham’s status as one of the best places in Britain to live, work and visit.
“It’s important the work carried out is of high quality and results in further improvements to the award-winning town centre. The end result will benefit residents, businesses and visitors. We will also look to minimise the disruption during the busy Christmas period.”
