There is mystery amongst residents in a Nottinghamshire town as they have noticed an unpleasant smell in the area. Locals in West Bridgford have taken to social media about a ‘strange’ smell that’s said to have affected the area as well as Lady Bay and The Meadows.
One person reported that the smell began at 1am on Monday (April 3) and was still evident later on in the morning. Residents and local businesses in the town centre have spoken out on the mystery smell that’s been lingering in West Bridgford on Monday.
Sara Parry, 35, supervisor at Iguazu, in Gordon Road in West Bridgford, said she noticed the smell when leaving for work on Monday. Sara said: “I smelt it this morning when I left home. They’ve been doing stuff with the water, I had an issue with my water pressure, it could be something to do with that. It is a really strange smell, leaning towards (smelling like) poo. Who knows what’s going on?"

She added a sewage-like smell was also noticeable in Bridgford Road, elsewhere on the West Bridgford high street. Sara added: “It smells bad there on and off. It is on and off, then it goes and one day you think they might have resolved it but it comes back again.”
Samuel Barnes 53, who has lived in the area for nearly 10 years, first noticed the smell in the late morning. Mr Barnes said: “There’s definitely something. When I came to town this morning the smell was there. It’s so bizarre. I do know there was some water works recently. I’m not sure on the cause, it’s just there.”
However, Gunay Acar, 39, waiter at Istanbul BBQ House in Gordon Road, wasn’t aware of the issue with the smell and said none of his customers have mentioned it. “We only smell kebabs here,” he joked.
“We don’t have a chance to go out because we are busy, even on days off we don’t have a chance to walk down the high street. No one has complained about it to us, this is the first i’ve heard. Even on Saturday it was so busy here and no one complained.”
A Rushcliffe Borough Council spokesperson said: "We've received no specific reports to date of any odour in or around West Bridgford. However, we are aware spring is amongst the times of year when agricultural and other activities can periodically give rise to odours in the local atmosphere depending on wind speed, direction and other climatic factors."
