Resident 'bleeding profusely' after scratch attack by Lanarkshire care home worker

A worker who left a care home resident bleeding 'profusely' after scratching their face with her nails has been struck off.

Sandra Wright lashed out after having her hair pulled at Carnbroe Care Centre in Coatbridge. She retaliated and scratched the resident's face which left four deep lacerations in September 2021.

Wright later threw biscuits out of a window as the resident tried to take one before snarling 'the birds will get them'. The callous carer also branded another resident 'smelly' when she passed them in a corridor between June and August 2020.

Wright was hauled before a panel of the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) who banned her from the sector. The hearing was told she felt 'deep remorse' for leaving the resident bleeding after she had lashed out.

But the panel said her actions would have left the resident 'scared and unsafe' when they should have instead been protected from harm. They said her behaviour showed a 'disregard' for the feelings and wellbeing of vulnerable people in her care.

In a written ruling, the SSSC said: "The most serious behaviour is scratching the resident's face as this caused direct physical harm to the resident and the nature of the injury suggests this was a deliberate act rather than an accidental scratch.

"You apologised for scratching the resident and have expressed deep remorse for your actions.

"Although this behaviour is unlikely to be repeated, this allegation is so serious that it must be addressed to uphold the reputation of the profession.

"If the behaviour was repeated, vulnerable people would be placed at risk of physical and emotional harm.

"The SSSC considers a removal order is the most appropriate sanction as it is both necessary and justified in the public interest and to maintain the continuing trust and confidence in the social service profession."
