Resident blasts council for neighbour's 'special treatment' to abuse bin recycling system

A fed-up resident claims the council are allowing his neighbours to abuse the recycling system and leave their bins overflowing.

Bryan Clark lives on Cassillis Terrace in Maybole and claims one of his neighbours receives special treatment to fill their bins with general mixed rubbish and have bins emptied “at their whim”, when other residents would be fined for doing the same.

Bryan, 62, says the issue has been going on for over a year and has previously complained to his local councillors, who he said ‘promised action’ but the ‘result was total inaction’.

He has now lodged a Freedom of Information (FOI) Request with South Ayrshire Council asking for information as to why his neighbours “are permitted not to utilise normal waste disposal and recycle services.”

Bryan told Ayrshire Live: “Never do they place their bins as normal. Their garden is disgraceful.

“It’s infuriating. It’s depressing and it gets you down.

“All the rest of us are fined if we put the wrong rubbish into a bin but they have got special dispensation not to do that.

Bryan, who was born in Maybole and lived in the Highlands for a number of years, said he requested an FOI as he “was appalled by the reaction of the councillors who just dropped the matter.”

In his FOI to the council, he said: “You permit them to do have gardens full of waste only to be collected, it appears, at their whim.

“Why is their abuse of nature allowed?

“Why is the huge potential of rat infestation allowed by your authority?”

Bryan said the solution would be for his neighbours to “simply put their bins out like everyone else does.”

He added: “It takes a wee bit from everyone to do something.

“If we all get the basics right, we’re moving towards a better society.”

A council spokesperson said: "Everyone is responsible for dealing with their own household waste.

"Of the four properties in question, two are council-owned and two are privately-owned. We have been in contact with the council tenants to remind them of their responsibilities and the landlords for the other two properties have contacted their tenants.

"We have arranged for the bins and rubbish to be cleared on several occasions.

"We are visiting this area on a weekly basis to monitor the situation and we will continue to take appropriate action."
