Researchers find macrophages may be scavenger cells of the immune system

Washington [US]: Alveoli are microscopic air sacs in our lungs that exchange gases between the air we breathe and our blood. To keep this process running properly, the alveolar epithelial cells create a material called "surfactant," which coats the alveoli like a film.

This complex, which is mostly comprised of phospholipids and proteins, assists to lower alveolar surface tension. It also functions as a filter, consistently capturing bacteria and viruses that enter the lungs when we breathe. The findings of the study were published in the journal Science Immunology.
