A LARGE cargo ship sailing on the River Clyde ran aground this morning prompting a coastguard recovery mission.
At around 10:18am The Greenock Coastguard Team received multiple reports of a boat which had become stuck near the Erskine Bridge Hotel.
Upon arrival, the vessel was found to be "well aground" and only 10 metres from the shore.
Two tugboats were needed to return the boat, which measures 98 metres in length, to the river so that it could continue toward its intended destination King George the Fifth Docks in Glasgow.
It is understood that there were no injuries as a result of the incident which was resolved shortly before 12pm.
An HM Coastguard spokesperson said: “At 10:18am this morning HM Coastguard received a number of 999 calls reporting a large cargo vessel aground near the Erskine Bridge Hotel.
“Coastguard officers attended the scene. It was confirmed the vessel was approximately 10 metres from the shore and was well aground.
“Coastguard personnel confirmed two tugboats on the scene both tugboats then managed to free the aground vessel.
“The aground vessel was 98 metres in length and at 11:50 the vessel was safely continued passage to King George the Fifth Docks in Glasgow."
