Republican officials slammed for sharing AI-generated photo of Iran war

  • Several Republican officials faced criticism for circulating an AI-generated image that falsely claimed to show an American airman rescued from behind enemy lines in Iran.
  • The image, posted by a pro-Trump X account, purported to depict a U.S. airman recovered Sunday after his F-15 jet was shot down over Iran, an event confirmed by President Donald Trump.
  • Texas Governor Greg Abbott, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and New York Rep. Mike Lawler were among the prominent GOP figures who shared the image, which garnered over five million views.
  • Community notes and online detection tools quickly identified the image as artificially generated, leading to widespread backlash against the officials for sharing misinformation.
  • All three Republican officials subsequently deleted their posts amid calls for improved media literacy, with the incident occurring five weeks into the U.S. war against Iran.
