A representative of Victorian federal MP Zoe Daniel has clashed with former MP Tim Wilson at a weekend Anzac service in Melbourne.
Mr Wilson, who was ousted from the federal seat of Goldstein by Ms Daniel at the last election came forward to lay a wreath at the event on Sunday after it was announced that Ms Daniel was not in attendance.
An MC announced that the wreath would be laid by a representative of Ms Daniel, but Mr Wilson said he was handed the wreath by organisers of the event at Beaumaris.
Video of the incident shared on Twitter by journalist Lucie Morris-Marr, who attended the event, showed the representative of Ms Daniel in a verbal stoush with Mr Wilson after the wreath-laying ceremony.
The representative said Mr Wilson's behaviour was "inappropriate and ridiculous", with Mr Wilson firing back that it was inappropriate that "the federal member for Goldstein isn't at an Anzac Day service in her community".
Ms Daniel said she was not at the event due to a volunteer lifesaving commitment involving her son, but had sent a representative.
"There's a level of respect required for Anzac Day events. It's not about me and it's not about Tim Wilson quite frankly. It's about veterans, it's about Anzacs, it's about those who've served before them and since," she told ABC Radio National.
The Goldstein MP said she would be attending several events across the community on Anzac Day.
"It's important to mark the day when possible by laying a wreath. So several members of my staff last year attended different events to do so," she said.
"It's not about the personalities involved, it's about the gesture to mark the occasion and the solemnity of that."
On Twitter, Mr Wilson defended his actions, saying someone at the event handed him the wreath to lay.
"I did not ask for it. And I felt obliged to do the right thing and deliver it," he tweeted.
Mr Wilson said it was disappointing the incident was "being spun for political objectives".
State Labor MP Ryan Batchelor said on Twitter that he was at the event and witnessed the incident involving Mr Wilson.
"It was unedifying behaviour, and disrespectful of him to pull a stunt like that at Anzac Day service," he said.
