Report: Washington to Fire Coach Mike Hopkins After Seven Seasons

Washington appears set to begin life in the Big Ten with a new men’s basketball coach.

The Huskies are dismissing coach Mike Hopkins, according to a Friday afternoon report from Pete Thamel of ESPN.

Hopkins, 54, has served as Washington’s coach since the 2017-18 season.

Under the former Syracuse guard, the Huskies went 122–110 and made the NCAA tournament in 2019. However, Washington is 17–14 this season.

Per Thamel, Hopkins will coach the Huskies in the Pac-12 tournament—scheduled to be played March 13-16 in Las Vegas—and any postseason tournament.

Washington hired Hopkins away from the Orange, for whom he spent over two decades as an assistant, in March 2017.

Hopkins made an instant impact, leading the Huskies to a 21–13 record in 2018 and the aforementioned tournament berth in ’19. He was named the Pac-12’s Coach of the Year both seasons,

Despite Hopkins’s considerable success as a recruiter, Washington slid to 15–17 in 2020 and 5–21 in 2021—never truly recovering after the COVID-19 pandemic.
