Report: Warriors could target 16-year veteran in free agency

The Golden State Warriors still have two open roster spots to fill. Following the addition of Chris Paul, Mike Dunleavy will likely be searching for talent willing to accept a veteran minimum contract. Currently, the Warriors could use some additional depth at both forward positions as the front office looks to round out their roster ahead of next season.

According to a recent report by HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto, Rudy Gay is a player that is drawing interest from the Warriors. Golden State may face some competition for Gay’s services, though, as Scotto also noted, the Los Angeles Lakers, Dallas Mavericks, Chicago Bulls, and New Orleans Pelicans also hold an interest in potentially adding him to their roster.

“Veteran forward Rudy Gay is expected to draw interest from several playoff-caliber teams, including the Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Lakers, Dallas Mavericks, Chicago Bulls, and New Orleans Pelicans, league sources told HoopsHype,” Scotto wrote.

Gay has already found himself on two new teams this summer, having first been moved as part of the deal that saw the Utah Jazz acquire John Collins and then again when the Atlanta Hawks sent him to the Oklahoma City Thunder in a cost-cutting deal.

On July 19, The Athletic’s Shams Charania reported that the Thunder were waiving Gay, allowing him to become an unrestricted free agent once he clears waivers. Gay participated in 56 games for the Jazz this past season, averaging 5.2 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 1 assist per game, shooting 38% from the field and 25.4% from deep.

Despite a 17-year NBA tenure, Gay has only tasted postseason basketball on three occasions, with the last time coming in 2019 for the San Antonio Spurs. As such, the opportunity to potentially contend for a championship with the Warriors may be a deciding factor on where the veteran forward chooses to spend his 18th NBA season.
