With the United States licking its wounds after its worst-ever Women's World Cup performance, a coaching change is reportedly in order.
USWNT coach Vlatko Andonovski is expected to resign from his position in the near future, according to a Wednesday afternoon report from Lizzy Becherano and Emily Keogh of 90min.
Andonovski, 46, has led the national team since 2019. He replaced World Cup-winning coach Jill Ellis on October 28 of that year, and went 51-5-9 in his four years in charge.
However, the United States floundered at this year’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. The Americans were held to a pair of draws in the group stage by the Netherlands and Portugal, and bowed out against Sweden in the round of 16, losing on penalty kicks.
That followed a surprising bronze medal at the Summer Olympics in Tokyo in 2021, in which the United States lost 1–0 to Canada in the semifinals.
Andonovski attracted heavy criticism throughout the World Cup. U.S. great Carli Lloyd drew attention for saying that a lack of scoring “has been a general theme with Vlatko ever since he became the coach in 2019.” She had played under Andonovski at the tail end of her career.
