Report: Texans interviewing former Dolphins coach Brian Flores for second time

The Houston Texans are taking another look at former Miami Dolphins coach Brian Flores.

According to Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network, the Texans are interviewing Flores for a second time. The Texans initially interviewed Flores for their coaching vacancy on Jan. 14.

Flores has history with general manager Nick Caserio from their shared time with the New England Patriots from 2004-18. Flores was in the scouting department in New England from 2004-07 before he transitioned to the coaching staff in 2008. Since 2001, Caserio had a variety of jobs between the coaching staff and scouting department before settling in at director of player personnel from 2008-20.

The 40-year-old coach compiled a 24-25 record with the Dolphins. Aside from a losing season in his first year in 2019, Miami posted consecutive winning seasons, albeit none of them resulted in playoff qualification.

What makes Flores an appealing candidate for the Texans is his familiarity with Caserio and executive vice president of football operations Jack Easterby, who was also in New England as a character coach from 2013-18.

If the Texans name Flores their fifth full-time coach in team history, it will further ensure that Houston is “Patriots South,” despite what chairman and CEO Cal McNair would like fans to believe.
