Report: Steve Clifford has emerged as candidate to return to Hornets

The Charlotte Hornets coaching search feels to be never ending.

After being spurned by Warriros assistant Kenny Atkinson after verbally agreeing to be Charlotte’s next head coach, Michael Jordan and company are back to the drawing board to find their next leader.

Reported by ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski on Tuesday, Hornets owner Michael Jordan would meet with Mike D’Antoni for the third time to discuss the head coaching vacancy.

But, a familiar face in Charlotte may have just entered the chat.

Reported by NBA Insider Marc Stein on Thursday, former Hornets head coach Steve Clifford ‘has emerged as a candidate’ to return to Charlotte.

Stein:

“There is some serious mounting buzz that former Hornets coach Steve Clifford, who already coached in Charlotte for five seasons and took Michael Jordan’s team to the playoffs twice, has emerged as a candidate to make a return to the Queen City as Jordan scrambles to fill the massive void on his bench following Kenny Atkinson’s shock decision to stay in Golden State as an assistant.”

Clifford coached the Hornets from 2013-18, leading them to two playoff appearances. Clifford spent last season as a coaching consultant for Brooklyn Nets head coach Steve Nash following his three-year stint coaching the Orlando Magic.
