The New England Patriots are expected to sign former Washington Commanders running back Antonio Gibson, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
Gibson recorded 65 carries for 265 yards and a touchdown on the ground with Washington in 2023. More importantly, he added a bit more to the receiving role with 48 receptions for 389 yards and two touchdowns. He split time in the backfield with Brian Robinson Jr. last season.
Gibson will add to a Patriots’ backfield that includes Rhamondre Stevenson as the primary back. He will give the Patriots offense a receiving threat at the position, as well as a good third-down back. This could particularly be useful if New England wants to develop a rookie quarterback. Quick and easy throws could be a recipe for success.
The Patriots have been looking for this type of receiving back since the departure of James White. Gibson will now help fill that role.

New England still has several holes to fill over the course of free agency.
However, signing Gibson is undoubtedly a good start. They have already locked up some in-house talent, and now, they are beginning to test the waters outside.
