Report: Panthers have been in contact with Texans about QB Deshaun Watson

The Carolina Panthers have been a little slow, in multiple regards, at reading the room. And they might be especially disconnected in their latest endeavor—particularly the one where they’ve been chasing around a quarterback facing 22 civil lawsuits of sexual misconduct and sexual assault.

On the eve of Deshaun Watson’s all-important court date, Jonathan M. Alexander of The Charlotte Observer has reported that the Panthers have remained in contact with the Houston Texans in regards to a potential trade for the 26-year-old passer. He notes that owner David Tepper and company have done their “due diligence” on Watson’s current legal situation and are gauging what it’d take to acquire him—that is, of course, depending on Friday’s outcome.

Today, a grand jury will hear evidence stemming from 10 criminal complaints filed against Watson. This proceeding may determine if these complaints are turned into charges—which can range from misdemeanors of indecent assault, assault and harassment to the second-degree felony of sexual assault.

If Watson is cleared, the Panthers are expected to move ahead in their pursuit of the three-time Pro Bowler. As for what it would then take for the quarterback-desperate team to acquire him, Alexander adds they believe the package would still be a substantial one.

Carolina may have to part with three first-round picks, an additional pick and one or two of their young standout defenders. The group Houston would likely choose from should include defensive end Brian Burns, defensive tackle Derrick Brown, safety Jeremy Chinn and cornerback Jaycee Horn.

Many, if not all, eyes in the Carolina front office will presumably be on that Harris County courtroom.
