It turns out Nick Bosa’s five-year contract extension isn’t a new five-year deal that rolls in the final year of his rookie contract. Instead, the five-year pact will kick in after the fifth and final year of his rookie deal according to Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio.
Florio on Wednesday reported Bosa’s five-year, $170 million deal will kick in for the 2024 season, meaning he could earn up to $188.9 million over the next six seasons.
Buy 49ers TicketsOver the Cap has Bosa’s 2023 salary at $17.9 million instead of the $18.9 Florio reported, but either way that number is fully guaranteed for 2023, and then the massive extension that includes $122.5 million guaranteed will kick in.
Bosa, 25, will be 31 when he’s due to hit free agency again after the 2028 season.
It’s unclear for now exactly how the deal is structured, but it’s notable that the team didn’t drop his cap hit this year by starting the extension right away. Instead they got under the 2023 salary cap via other means.
Ultimately the deal was enough to get Bosa in the door, and given how close things were to landing where he wouldn’t play Sunday in Pittsburgh, the 49ers will take it.
