The NFL had a salary cap of $224.8 million per team in 2023. That number will increase significantly in 2024.
The cap is expected to be “in the neighborhood of” $243 million this season, with one source telling ProFootballTalk’s Mike Florio that the cap will be “closer to $250 million” than $243 million.
Right now, the Denver Broncos have $257,897,595 worth of Top 51 salaries in 2024, according to an estimate from OverTheCap.com.
The league’s cap increase is obviously notable for every team, but for the Broncos in particular, it would make the pain of releasing quarterback Russell Wilson (slightly) easier to handle.
Wilson will have a “dead money” salary cap hit of $85 million spread between the next two years if he is released as expected. Depending on how the Broncos decide to split it up, Wilson’s cap hit could be $35.4 million or $53 million in 2024 (after that, there will be $32m or $49.6m hits in 2025).
The higher the NFL’s salary cap, the easier it will be for Denver to eat Wilson’s dead money over the next two years. The league is expected to officially announce the 2024 salary cap number during or shortly after the NFL combine (Feb. 26-March 4).
