Report: NBC Sports Hires Former NFL QB as Big Ten Football Analyst

Former NFL quarterback Matt Cassel is set to join NBC Sports’s Big Ten coverage as a football analyst, the New York Post’s Andrew Marchand reported Monday.

Cassel most recently worked as an analyst for NBC Sports Boston and The 33rd Team since retiring from the NFL after the 2018 season.

The quarterback isn’t especially known for his college career, as he served in a backup role at USC from 2001–04 behind Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart. He played in 34 games in his four-year career, but didn’t start any of them.

His alma mater will be moving from the Pac-12 to the Big Ten in 2024, along with UCLA.

Cassel was selected in the seventh round of the 2005 draft by the Patriots, with whom he played for four seasons. In 2008, Cassel started for New England after Tom Brady suffered a torn ACL. He went 10–5 as a starter that season.

Cassel then played four seasons with the Chiefs, serving as the starter for the first two of those years. Cassel went 10–5 during the 2010 season and earned his first and only Pro Bowl selection.

To finish out his NFL career, Cassel played two years with the Vikings, one game with the Bills, half a season with the Cowboys, two seasons with the Titans and one final year with the Lions.
