Report: Malik Cunningham re-signing to Patriots’ practice squad

Malik Cunningham didn’t remain a free agent for long.

The rookie quarterback reportedly re-signed to the New England Patriots’ practice squad on Wednesday, per the NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

Cunningham was waived by the Patriots 10 days after signing a new three-year deal to the main roster. The news came as a bit of a surprise for fans hoping the former Louisville standout would work his way back into a more prominent role on the roster.

Some even thought he could potentially replace Mac Jones at quarterback if the season was in the toilet.

Coach Bill Belichick was complimentary of Cunningham’s improvements behind the scenes, and he even claimed early on Wednesday that the team would have the young signal caller back on the practice squad, if he cleared waivers. So there was always the belief that he would return at some point.

Cunningham is still green and a bit of a quarterback/wide receiver project for the Patriots. Julian Edelman once had a similar role, and he went on to become one of the best receivers in franchise history.

The potential is clearly there for Cunningham to do something special, if he continues putting in the work.
