The New England Patriots will embark on a new era with Jerod Mayo as the head coach.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Friday morning that the Patriots have hired Mayo to be the replacement for Bill Belichick, who mutually agreed to part ways with the team on Thursday.
Owner Robert Kraft wanted to move fast on a hire, and he did so by hiring the No. 1 in-house option in Mayo, who reportedly was already part of a succession plan to eventually replace the greatest coach of all time.
Mayo turned down a head coaching interview with the Carolina Panthers last offseason in hopes of being the next man up in New England, and after a historic day filled with emotions from Belichick’s exit, he’ll quickly turn the page as the new head coach of one of the NFL’s most prestigious franchises.

New England is expected to hire a general manager next to lead the way on the personnel search. There is plenty of work to be done for the 4-13 Patriots to get back to being respectable, much less contenders in a drastically improved AFC East division.
