Disgraced USA gymnastics and Michigan State sports doctor Larry Nassar was stabbed several times during an altercation at a federal prison in Florida while serving his sentence for sexually assaulting female gymnasts, according to the Associated Press. The incident at United States Penitentiary Coleman occurred Sunday, and as of Monday, he is in stable condition.
Nassar, 59, was stabbed in the chest and back. The sources who spoke to the AP were not allowed to disclose information and spoke on the condition of anonymity.
Nassar was sentenced to 40 to 175 years in prison in 2018 after pleading guilty to 10 counts of felony criminal sexual conduct in the first degree. Seven counts came in Michigan’s Ingham County, and three came in Eaton County. He also pleaded guilty to possession of child pornography.
During victim impact statements in 2018, athletes testified that Nassar had been sexually assaulting athletes for more than 20 years, and nothing was done about it despite many survivors’ notifying coaches and trainers.
More than 100 women collectively sought more than $1 billion from the federal government for the FBI’s failure to stop Nassar when agents became aware of allegations against him in 2015. He was eventually arrested by Michigan State University police in 2016.
