Source: Details Emerge on Extent of Joe Burrow’s Calf Injury

Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow suffered a calf strain on the field during training camp practice Thursday, per Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer.

Burrow’s diagnosis is in line with what Bengals coach Zac Taylor told reporters after practice. While Burrow's injury looked much worse on video when it happened, it appears that Cincinnati dodged a major injury involving its franchise quarterback.

The 26-year-old was carted off the field following the injury, which occurred late in the Bengals practice. Burrow was scrambling to the near side of the field when he suddenly pulled up, appearing to suffer a non-contact injury.

After members of Cincinnati’s training staff tended to him, Burrow limped over to the cart before he was removed from the field.

The latest injury to the Bengals star signal-caller comes during a time when he is expected to sign a contract extension that would make him potentially the NFL’s highest-paid quarterback, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

On Tuesday, Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert signed a massive five-year, $262.5 million deal, giving him the highest average annual value of any contract in league history. But, according to Schefter, Burrow’s deal is projected to be “well north” of Herbert’s deal.

During the 2022 season, Burrow threw for 4,475 passing yards, 35 touchdowns and 12 interceptions in 16 regular season games. In three postseason appearances in the ‘22 campaign, he registered 721 passing yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions while leading the Bengals to an appearance in the AFC title game against the eventual Super Bowl champion Chiefs.
