Report: Cowboys Unlikely to Pursue OBJ After Brandin Cooks Trade

On the heels of the Cowboys‘s reported trade for Texans receiver Brandin Cooks, the prospect of Dallas adding Odell Beckham Jr. to its receiving corps has reportedly taken a big hit.

The Cowboys, who have long been linked to the coveted free agent, are now believed to “likely” be out of the competition for Beckham following the Cooks trade, according to ESPN’s Ed Werder, per an informed source.

“Hard to do Cooks and OBJ,” the source said, per Werder.

Sunday’s report adds to the ongoing saga surrounding Beckham and his long-awaited decision on his next team. Outside of his health, Beckham has been the subject of speculation regarding the terms of his next deal. He recently refuted a report claiming he was looking for at least $20 million a year and clarified that any prospective offers from teams in the $4 million range would not be enough.

Considering the price tag Beckham could command on the open market, the likelihood of the veteran wideout heading to one of his long-rumored destinations in the Cowboys may not be in the cards. While the addition of Cooks is not yet official, Dallas will reportedly be on the hook for $12 million of the remaining $18 million guaranteed on his contract.

As the offseason continues, it remains to be seen if Beckham is truly no longer a target for the Cowboys, though he will surely have no shortage of suitors as he continues to weigh his options.

Earlier this month, Beckham held a highly-publicized workout that was reportedly attended by 12 teams, including the Giants, Browns and Rams—all three of his former teams – as well as the Jets, Bills and Patriots. Most recently, the 30-year-old has been closely linked to the Jets, who are reportedly “interested and staying in touch” amid Aaron Rodgers’s desire to have OBJ join him in an eventual move to New York.
