The Indianapolis Colts are reportedly among the teams most interested in James Madison quarterback Cole Johnson ahead of the 2022 NFL draft.
Despite trading a third-round pick for veteran Matt Ryan this week, there is a very good chance the Colts take another swing at the quarterback position during the draft at the end of April.
That could be in the second round for prospects like Desmond Ridder, Matt Corral and Carson Strong. It could also mean the Colts wait until Day 3 for a prospect like Johnson.
Confirmed with a source that the #Colts & #Chargers both "love" @JMUFootball QB Cole Johnson, with Colts going as far as to compare him to Matt Ryan. Interest from a bunch of teams, but Colts & LAC are enamored with him. Feeling is he will wind up a 6th-7th rd pick. #NFLDraft

In 2021, Johnson completed 68% of his passes for 3,779 yards, 41 touchdowns and just four interceptions. At 6-foot-5, Johnson reportedly weighed in at 220 pounds at James Madison’s pro day earlier this week.
The Colts still have Sam Ehlinger on the roster and it’s likely that he will be competing for the backup role behind Ryan. Whether that competition comes in the form of a rookie like Johnson is the great mystery of the offseason.
The Colts were able to buy themselves some time at the quarterback position by trading for Ryan but that won’t stop them from taking continued shots until they find the long-term answer at the position.
