Report: Browns won’t cut QB Baker Mayfield

There is still no conclusion to QB Baker Mayfield’s time with the Cleveland Browns. In short order this offseason, Mayfield went from being the team’s starter in 2022 to requesting a trade to feeling disrespected and, finally, not being traded during the NFL draft.

The Browns have limited options right now with Mayfield. A trade with the Carolina Panthers makes the most sense but already fell through once. Waiting for a quarterback to get hurt before training camp is possible but unlikely given the limited physicality during that time.

The final options seemed to be releasing the quarterback or having him back on the roster as earlier as mandatory minicamp. Neither seems like a good plan.

According to Mary Kay Cabot, Cleveland has no plans to release Mayfield if they can’t find a trade.

Releasing the former first overall pick would require the team to pay his entire salary for 2022, would allow Mayfield to pick his next destination (with Pittsburgh rumored) and be the worst outcome for the team.

With Deshaun Watson now facing 23 civil allegations, Jacoby Brissett would be set to start if the team moved on from Mayfield. While the Heisman Trophy winner had a rough 2021 season that included a major injury, his 2020 campaign showed he can play well in Kevin Stefanski’s offense.

If Mayfield is on the roster, the Browns will not be able to keep him away from the team unless the two sides agree to do so. Otherwise, Mayfield must have access to the same services that other rostered players do.

While it feels like a game of chicken between Cleveland and Carolina (with other teams possibly involved), Mayfield is unlikely to get his release and decide where he wants to play next year. Otherwise, what is next for the team and Mayfield is anyone’s guess.
