Report: Broncos were ‘very aggressive’ trying to sign WR Allen Lazard

Before he agreed to a four-year, $44 million contract with the New York Jets, wide receiver Allen Lazard drew serious interest from the Denver Broncos, according to a report from theScore.com’s Jordan Schultz.

“Broncos were also very aggressive in their pursuit of WR Allen Lazard, but likely would have had to make a trade,” Shcultz tweeted Tuesday evening. “Denver really values his toughness and route-running.”

Lazard caught 169 passes for 2,236 yards and 20 touchdowns in five seasons (57 games) with the Green Bay Packers from 2018-2022.

Reports emerged last week that the Broncos have fielded trade calls about Courtland Sutton, Jerry Jeudy and KJ Hamler. In order to be able to sign a receiver like Lazard, the team might have needed to create more salary cap space by trading one of those three receivers.

The team might still trade away one of those WRs at some point this spring, even after failing to land Lazard.

Denver also waived a pair of bottom-of-the-roster receivers on Tuesday. It seems safe to assume the Broncos’ current wide receiver room could be subject to some major shakeups this offseason.
