Broncos trade 7th round pick to Saints for kicker Wil Lutz

The Denver Broncos are acquiring kicker Wil Lutz in a trade with the New Orleans Saints, according to a report from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

The Broncos are trading next year’s seventh-round draft pick to the Saints in exchange for the veteran kicker, according to KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis.

Lutz (29) entered the league as an undrafted free agent out of Georgia State with the Baltimore Ravens in 2016. After failing to make Baltimore’s 53-man roster as a rookie, Lutz was picked up by then-Saints coach Sean Payton.

Lutz went on to win New Orleans’ kicking job right away and he played five years under Payton before spending the 2021 season on injured reserve. That year, Brett Maher kicked for the Saints, going 16-of-18 on field goal attempts.

Maher served as Denver’s kicker this summer, going 4-of-6 on field goal attempts during preseason. Maher is now set to be released following Payton’s reunion with Lutz.

Lutz had a down year last season, ranking 32nd in the NFL in field goal percentage (74.2%). He went 23-of-31 on field goals in 2022 with a long of 60 yards. Lutz was a perfect 33-of-33 on extra point attempts last fall.
