Report: Broncos request interview with Brian Flores for DC position

The Denver Broncos have asked the Pittsburgh Steelers for permission to interview linebackers coach/senior defensive assistant Brian Flores for their defensive coordinator position, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Flores previously interviewed for the Broncos’ head coach opening in 2019. He later filed a lawsuit against the team (and other parties) claiming that the club interviewed him merely to satisfy the NFL’s Rooney Rule. Denver strongly denied the allegations, calling them “blatantly false.”

The lawsuit is still ongoing.

At the time of the 2019 interview, the Broncos were being run by former team president/CEO Joe Ellis and former general manager/executive VP of football operations John Elway. Denver is now under new ownership, with owner/CEO Greg Penner running the operation and general manager George Paton and new head coach Sean Payton below him.

Payton just met with Ejiro Evero, the holdover defensive coordinator from Nathaniel Hackett’s staff, on Thursday. The fact that Payton put in an interview request with Flores after meeting with Evero might not be a good sign for the chances of Evero remaining with the team.
