Report: Bears interested in Commanders OC Eric Bieniemy, among others

The Chicago Bears are sitting at 4-8 on the season and could be in the market for a new head coach. Matt Eberflus has a 7-22 record as Chicago’s head coach in two seasons.

According to Josina Anderson of CBS Sports, the Bears could have their eyes on Washington Commanders offensive coordinator/assistant head coach Eric Bieniemy if they do make a change.

Here’s the full tweet from Anderson:

There is a connection between Bieniemy and the Bears. Chicago general manager Ryan Poles was with the Kansas City Chiefs for 12 years before coming to the Bears as GM ahead of the 2022 season. Bieniemy spent 10 years in Kansas City before coming to Washington in 2023.

However, when Poles was named Bears GM in 2022, he did not interview Bieniemy. Poles was hired two days before Eberflus, and the Bears had already named three finalists via their search committee, which included chairman George McCaskey.

Bieniemy’s first season in Washington has had its ups and downs. He’s done some good work with second-year quarterback Sam Howell. His game plans have been pass-heavy despite Washington’s inability to protect Howell.

The Commanders will almost assuredly be making wholesale changes as soon as the season ends under new owner Josh Harris. Head coach Ron Rivera already dismissed defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio and secondary coach Brent Vieselmeyer. Rivera will reportedly finish out the regular season as head coach.
