On Tuesday, a disturbing incident unfolded in New York City as a suspect, identified as Gary Worthy, 57, allegedly committed multiple robberies, resulting in a police officer and an innocent bystander being shot.
Worthy, who has a lengthy criminal history including murder, robbery, burglary, and narcotics possession, was on lifetime parole for firearms possession. Just six days prior to the incident, he was arrested for felony narcotics possession and resisting arrest.
The chaos began when a 911 call reported an armed robbery at the Village Market grocery store. Worthy reportedly entered the store, brandished a black revolver, and demanded money while threatening employees and customers. A shot was fired during the robbery before Worthy fled the scene.
Responding officers were alerted to another robbery at a smoke shop, where Worthy had fired a shot. Officers quickly identified and located Worthy near Jamaica Avenue and 160th Street. When ordered to stop, Worthy fled and drew his firearm, resulting in an exchange of gunfire that left Officer Rich Wong injured and Worthy fatally wounded.
During the confrontation, a 26-year-old woman was also shot but is expected to recover, along with Officer Wong. Mayor Eric Adams expressed frustration with the criminal justice system, highlighting Worthy's criminal record and questioning why he was free to commit further crimes.
Police Benefit Association President Patrick Hendry condemned the system's failure to keep dangerous criminals off the streets, emphasizing the risks faced by law enforcement officers. He called for urgent reforms to address the shortcomings in the criminal justice system.
The incident remains under investigation as authorities work to piece together the events that led to the tragic outcome.
