A review of federal filings has revealed that New York Rep. Anthony D’Esposito’s campaign spent tens of thousands of donor dollars on questionable expenses, including steakhouses, bars, and unaccountable payments to a close aide and friend. The spending, often lacking critical details, has raised red flags that could lead to an ethics probe, according to campaign finance experts.
From the launch of his campaign in the spring of 2022 through the latest October quarterly filing, the campaign spent nearly $102,000 on food and beverage, with significant amounts allocated to steakhouses, bars, and liquor stores. Some expenses were listed without specific details, such as simply naming the recipient as 'Steak.'
Additionally, the campaign spent over $43,000 on Ubers since August 2022, including a single transaction costing over $12,000. A notable expense was nearly $600 for a hostel in Edinburgh, Scotland, despite the congressman being documented at a local parade in his district during that time.
The campaign defended the spending, stating that it was associated with raising funds and running political campaigns. However, questions have been raised about the lack of clear connections between the spending at establishments and official campaign fundraising events.
Furthermore, the campaign made unitemized credit card payments totaling approximately $156,000, which raised concerns as campaigns are required to itemize disbursements exceeding $200. The campaign also relied heavily on outside consultants for various aspects of its political operation.
While it remains to be seen if these expenditures represent a breach of the law, experts emphasize the need for robust enforcement of campaign finance regulations to prevent misuse of funds for personal expenses under the guise of fundraising or public engagement.
As Rep. D’Esposito faces scrutiny over his campaign spending, the situation underscores the importance of transparency and accountability in political fundraising and expenditure practices.
