Alabama state Representative Brett Easterbrook faces attempted human-trafficking and soliciting-prostitution charges after allegedly agreeing to pay $500 (£380) for sex with someone he believed was a minor under the state's trafficking law. Authorities said no actual minor was involved in the undercover operation.
The Republican lawmaker was among 17 people arrested in an Escambia County operation conducted between 1 and 3 October. He previously voted for legislation making certain sex crimes against children under 12 capital offences, although that law does not apply to the allegations against him.
