One of Ayrshire's most famous restaurants and bars is to reopen almost three years after it closed.
The iconic Ship Inn will swing open its doors once again in January 2023 after being closed due to the Covid outbreak in March 2020.
The Irvine pub has been rumoured to be reopening for almost a year with extensive refurbishment work taking place at the harbourside venue.
Widely regarded as Irvine's oldest public house, the incredibly popular Ayrshire boozer dates back to 1567.
And it was revealed tonight that the 455-year history with the town would continue with owners confirming that it will reopen in January 2023.
The venue's Facebook page simply said tonight: "The Ship, Ayrshire. Fail we may, sail we must. Reopening January 2023."
It's understood that the pub remains in the hands of the Murray family, who have owned the famous bar and restaurant for many years.
Tragedy struck the family in 2020 after it was announced by Christopher Murray that his brother and fellow Ship Inn co-owner, Jamie had passed away.
We revealed in September that The Ship faces forking out £71,000 on historical business rates.
Renovations at the venue have been so extensive that parts of the ancient venue are no longer the same and will be used for different things.
Despite the alterations, it's anticipated that Ayrshire Valuation Joint Board (AVJB) — the body tasked with setting non-domestic rates and council tax — will still charge the iconic venue £71,000 based on a historical assessment.
The news that the pub will be reopening has delighted foodies in Ayrshire and beyond.
One customer said: "Hoping your chicken in pastry stuffed with cream cheese in an orange jus is still on the menu...I've had withdrawal symptoms!"
Another added: "This is wonderful news for Irvine. Wishing you every success, which i'm sure it will be."
One foodie concluded: "I'm sure it will be worth the wait!! Can't wait to get back and see and taste all new things with some memories of the old"
