Reo Hatate linked with left-field Celtic transfer exit for Saudi

Reo Hatate has been linked with a Celtic transfer exit for Saudi.

It's claimed there is interest in the Japanese midfielder Hatate from Al-Ittihad.

Reports in Saudi suggest the player, 25, is close to the Saudi Pro League club.

A leading news outlet covering the club claims the midfielder is among targets for the club.

Al-Ittihad have been active in the transfer market already with marquee signings Karim Benzema from Real Madrid and N'Golo Kante from Chelsea heading to Saudi.

It follows a recent trend of high-profile players moving to the mega-money Saudi league with Cristiano Ronaldo joining Al Nassr in January.

The latest rumoured interest in Hatate comes after Ange Postecoglou was tipped to make a move to bring the midfielder to Tottenham after his move to North London.

Postecoglou signed Hatate for Celtic from the J-League with speculation rife over a possible reunion at Spurs.

But Brendan Rodgers remains confident over Celtic's position in the transfer market both in terms of incomings and departures.

He explained: “Over the course of our discussions I’ve seen the market we’re in and how well the recruitment has gone.

“Mark Lawwell has this pipeline of players that are available and I think it’s really impressive what he’s done since coming in and the markets he’s been able to tap into.

“That will continue. That’s where the club is at. Listen, when you’ve got top players at the club they are always going to attract attention elsewhere.

“Those boys have come in and done exceptionally well. Good players will always attract attention. But I don’t worry about that.”

Reflecting on his season and setting his goals for the future, Hatate said: "Looking back on my own season, I played 32 league games, scoring six goals and assisting nine. In all official games, I had nine goals and 11 assists.

"I was aiming for double-figure goals and double-figure assists, so while I achieved my assists, I didn't reach my goalscoring target, which will be the challenge for next season.

"Kyogo was named Scottish Premiership Player of the Year. As a fellow Japanese player, I felt proud, but also frustrated. If I had worked harder, I could have won that honour.

"On the one hand, I was happy for him but on the other hand, I frankly felt frustrated. It will motivate me even further to grow as a player.

"In the Scottish league, a foreign country, a Japanese player scored 27 goals and became the top scorer. This is no easy feat. That's why I'm happy that I was able to make a small contribution with my assists.

"Last season, when I joined Celtic in the middle of the campaign, my problem was I ran out of steam in terms of my condition by the end of the season.

"But this season, I set myself the goal of maintaining a high level of performance throughout the season and I was able to do that and play in the Champions League. I regard it as a solid season."
