Rent fraud in Chennai: Hunt on for gang members

CHENNAI: Police have launched a hunt for a gang who duped 10 crore from 100 landlords promising to rent out their homes. The incident came to light after one of the victim approached police.

The gang runs a private firm near Potheri and deals with rental houses, sale and banking transactions.

The gang targeted landlords who advertised for tenants in Perungalathur, Vandalur, Urapakkam, Guduvancherry, Maraimalai Nagar and Manivakkam. They targeted mainly the apartment dwellers.

While they would promise landlords 10,000 per month as rent, they leased out the houses to tenants for a year collecting 3 lakh to 10 lakh.

They used to put an agreement for one year. Soon after collecting the sum they would send the rent for two or three months and would escape. In this way, the gang cheated nearly 100 residents.
