Renowned Perthshire-based butcher Simon Howie has launched a haggis hunt in the run up to Burns Night, scouring the country for lads and lassies that fly the flag for the national bard using just their name 365 days a year.
Anyone with the first initial R and surname Burns such as Robert, Richard or Rebecca, and anyone willing to change their social media identity to the match arguably the most famous of all Scotsmen, are in with a chance of winning one of the 100 limited edition Burns Night hampers, fuelling a braw Burns Night supper.
Close friends of Simon Howie - Irn Bru, Walker’s, Nairns, Mrs Tilly’s, Mackies, Orkney Cheese and Mash Direct - have also given goodies for the boxes alongside the butcher’s award-winning haggis to make Burns night go with a bang.
Simon said: “We want to inject some fun into January, which is for many a mundane month due to the Christmas come-down.
“However, for Scots and those partial to a haggis supper, January is more than a long month of no daylight and no money.
“January for the haggis crew builds to a night of iconic poetry and wonderful food and drink as we celebrate Burns Night and as the UK’s Number 1 haggis brand, we love to mark the occasion in quirky and fun ways.
“This year we’re paying homage to Robert Burns himself, creating a clan like never before. With 100 special haggis hampers that cannot be bought up for grabs, we’re looking forward to seeing how many get involved by pledging allegiance on their social media accounts.”
The name Burns is believed to be the 133rd most popular in the UK. However, the competition is open to anyone wishing to join the R. Burns clan as long as they are willing to change their name on Instagram or Facebook to R. Burns for the occasion.
Simon Howie isn’t new to marking the occasion of Burns Night by doing something special. In 2021 the brand’s original haggis became the world’s first haggis to be launched over 107,000 feet to the edge of space.
And in 2010 the brand hosted the world’s highest Burns Supper at the top of Mount Kilmanjaro.
To be part of the hooley and win one of the limited edition hampers, anyone called or willing to change their social media name to R. Burns needs to follow Simon Howie Butchers on Facebook and Instagram, update one or both of the platforms to state their name as R. Burns and post ‘I am R. Burns. Gie me a #freeHowiehaggis’.
