A Renfrew man who got sozzled after his shift on Christmas Eve offered to give his work colleague a lift home.
Scot Gammie of Fulbar Road, was almost five times the legal drink-drive limit when he got behind the wheel of his fiancé’s car after finishing his nightshift on Christmas Eve.
Procurator fiscal depute Maria Murdoch told Paisley Sheriff Court: “Around 6.05am on December 24, police received a report that Gammie was on shift at his work in Hillington and appeared under the influence of alcohol.
“The police were advised Gammie was due to finish at 6.30am and they were provided details of the vehicle he would be driving.
“Police attended and observed two people within the car so they turned around and performed a traffic stop.
“The accused was in the drivers seat and he stated he had offered his passenger who is a work colleague a lift home as he doesn’t drive.
“Police asked the accused if he had insurance to drive this vehicle and he stated he didn’t.
“Police carried out a PNC check which showed Gammie only had a provisional license.
“After speaking with the passenger, police noted that he did not have a license either and therefore wasn’t qualified to a supervising passenger.
“The accused was cautioned and was told he was required to carry out a road side breath test which he failed.
“Gammie was taken to Govan police station where he was required to provide a further two breath samples which showed he had 96mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath.
“He was cautioned and charged and made no reply.”

The drink-drive limit is 22mg.
The father of two admitted he also drove the car with no licence and no insurance.
Defence agent, Kevin Brady told the court Gammie was working nightshift and took a “bit of a chance.”
He explained: “Gammie had been working nighshift on this day and he and his work colleagues had finished their work and he and his colleagues had cans of beer.
“They were told they could finish early and so they had cans of beer.
“He made the ridiculous decision to take the car.
“He acknowledges this is a very high reading.”
Sheriff Bruce Erroch QC said: “You were driving while drunk and you displayed a particularly high alcohol level so this is a matter I have to take seriously.”
Sheriff Erroch imposed a fine of £970 to be paid at £60 per month and disqualified Gammie from driving for 20 months.
