Renfrew Football Club Youth is holding festival after winning grant

Renfrew FC Youth has been proudly awarded the 2022 Adidas Grassroots Grant and is using it to host a festival at New Western Park.

Other football teams in the area, such as Harmony Row, Benburb Football Club - both from Govan and Paisley’s Gleniffer Thistle, will also be attending the festival for some friendly matches on Sunday, July 24.

The festival is free to attend and everyone is welcome to watch the games as well as enjoy the refreshments that will be provided.

Chairman Michael Shearer, 44, said: “We have created a nine-a-side football festival that will run across the pitch. We will have two games running at the same time. We are looking to have around 110 players and all their families there at no cost to them.

“Normally, if you are applying for that kind of football festival at that age group, it costs, roughly, £150 per team as an entry fee and all the other stuff that goes along with it. The SFA have waived their permit fee, so it is a completely free event.”

The Adidas Football Collective was created to break down barricades and enable everyone of all ages and genders to play football.

The grant selected 100 teams from nearly 1500 communities in Europe who have contributed the most to their local communities to receive £1000 funding through their grassroots support programme.

The grant has helped Renfrewshire teams break down the financial barriers that many teams currently face.

Michael continued: “The whole point of it is to enable clubs to have something for their teams to attend at no cost to them because it is tough times we are facing now. We are trying to break that financial barrier that many teams would normally struggle to raise money to attend these things.

“It is an all day kind of event too. The children will be playing football from nine in the morning to around 20 past two on the day. There are no winners or losers - every participant will get a medal and on the day, there are three awards to be given out such as Best Goal Scored, Player of the Day and a Fair Play award.”
