Renegades bat first in BBL clash with Heat

Brisbane Heat have won the bat flip in their Big Bash League (BBL) clash with the Melbourne Renegades in Cairns and opted to bowl first.

There was a short delay in the bat flip with a thunderstorm sliding past the ground.

Both teams failed to fire last season and national T20 skipper Aaron Finch, playing for the Renegades under captain Nic Maddinson, said they had a lot to play for. He was looking forward to watching their recruit Jon Wells.

"Our batting has been well below par in the last couple of years so to have Wells who has been a star in the past for Adelaide Strikers to anchor that middle order is a real positive for us," Finch told Fox Cricket.

The Heat have acquired former New Zealand international Colin Munro and England star Sam Billings who both have immense experience in T20 cricket around the world.

With Heat legend Chris Lynn joining the Adelaide Strikers their two star recruits will be integral to filling the breach.

BRISBANE HEAT: Jimmy Peirson (capt, wk), Max Bryant, Josh Brown, Colin Munro, Sam Billings, Ross Whiteley, James Bazley, Mark Steketee, Xavier Bartlett, Mitchell Swepson, Matthew Kuhnemann.

MELBOURNE RENEGADES: Nic Maddinson (capt), Aaron Finch, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Jon Wells, Andre Russell, Akeal Hosein, Will Sutherland, Tom Rogers, Kane Richardson, Mujeeb Ur Rahman.
