It was obvious which track Rematch was going towards. The game has continued to decline since its release, and it’s been an incredibly sad sight to see. It introduced a new way to play football, which had never been done before.
Rematch started strong, averaging more than 80k players in the initial weeks after release. But ever since then, the game has continued to lose players. It’s barely averaging 3K players on Steam, which just goes to show that Rematch is struggling to retain its once hardcore player base.
As someone who really enjoyed Rematch, this is quite disappointing to see. Despite its issues, I loved the idea behind the game and was excited to see it grow. But, in all this time, there hasn’t been any progress with the game. It’s been more or less the same since release.
Why Is Rematch Dying?

Rematch’s decline can be attributed to a number of things. Firstly, the game is lacking content-wise. For the first few hours while you are fighting out the controls, Rematch is incredible. But once you figure it out, you start noticing the flaws in the game. The buggy goalkeeper animations, shots not connecting properly, and many other issues are constant pain points after the novelty wears off.
Then, there is the gameplay loop. Once you start playing a bit more, you realize it’s the same meta over and over again. Everyone is spamming bladeshots or some weird thing they learned from TikTok. The game becomes less about football and more about what works in the game.
Lastly, there is a severe lack of content. Rematch would have done great with some actual football representations — jerseys, shoes, or skins of popular players. Sure, that’s not easy to get, but it would have worked really well.
In short, Rematch has potential, but it lacks a lot of polish. The gameplay has become tiring and repetitive quickly, and the lack of content hasn’t helped either. I still believe that Rematch still has potential if its issues are worked on. After all, Rocket League has the same formula, and it has remained relevant for so many years. But it’s going to take a ton of work from Sloclap to realize that potential.
