Remarkable new Edinburgh pictures show the city enjoying the swinging sixties

Edinburgh, like many cities across Britain, enjoyed a period of transformation across the 60s.

The country was finally over the hurdle of recuperating from the Second World War, people had a little bit more money in their pockets, and society in general was booming.

Unearthed images from days gone by show a different city, though in many ways not too different from the Edinburgh we know today.

With half a million residents, Edinburgh was reverting to multi-storey flats - though maintaining it's rich historic architecture.

In Sighthill, the Edinburgh College of Commerce opened its doors for the first time - later merged with Napier University.

Over at the Mound, underground heating saved the streets from deep snow through one of the worst winters the city has ever seen.

Later on in the decade, as strikes became more and more common, Princes Street sat bus free as municipal drivers launched a demand for better pay.

In 1964, plans were being drawn up for the St James Centre.

Designed by the Burke Martin Partnership, the centre would not be completed until 1973 - with the original St James Centre demolished in 2016.
