People living next to ‘overgrown’ wasteland in Arnold say plans for new apartments are a good idea. Proposals have been put forward for nine new flats on wasteland at the end of Cross Street, by Acton Road, and Mansfield Road.
The proposed development is due to have three floors consisting of three one-bedroom apartments and six two-bedroom apartments. As well as this, the plans involve five standard parking spaces, three electric parking spaces, one disabled parking bay and space for three motorcycles.
The plans show access to parking from Acton Road. Residents in the area say the land ‘looks awful’ and it would be better as flats, however, some shared concern over parking and access.

Resident Ron Griffiths approves of the plans as the land has become an ‘eyesore’. The 75-year-old, from Top Valley, said: “I think it should be used. I watched them sort it out last year, I thought it would have been built on by now.
“ It’s overgrown, it’s a bit of an eyesore now. You've got houses on both sides so it will fit in. It’s just a bit awkward for the entrance and exits, it's hard enough getting out as it is. I think it’s a good idea.”
Audrey Whetton, who has lived in Arnold her whole life, shared concern over the lack of spaces as Acton Road has a problem with parking. The 76-year-old said: “It looks a mess. The thing is the parking at the moment is really bad.
“With nine flats I don’t know how they’re going to have enough parking. They’re going to be up here, Cross Street is busy, and the main road, they’ve got Duke Street. It’s a problem for parking, the traffic comes up here as well.
“I don’t know about nine flats, it sounds a bit much. It’s a busy road, it’s a cut-through road. It’s a mixed bag of houses, different types of houses so some have got off-road parking.
“Other than that it’s an alright road, and it’s close to the shops. It’s easy access to everything, shops, buses and doctors. I think they could do something on it, it’s a bit of an eyesore. I don’t know about nine flats, it’s a bit much.”
Another resident, Jenny Mase, thinks the flats would be better than what is there currently, however, there’s not much infrastructure for those who would move in. The 35-year-old nurse said: “I feel ok about it. I don’t drive so traffic doesn’t bother me. It’s all overcrowded.
“Soon there will be no more land left anymore. There isn’t much around here anyway, in Arnold Town centre there’s not much, just loads of vape shops. The high street is dying out." Jenny added: “The state of it looks awful - I think it would be better.”
