Release date for Donald Trump biopic The Apprentice starring Sebastian Stan confirmed in the UK

A film to chart Donald Trump's early career as a businessman has been given an official release date in the UK, and fans do not have to wait long.

Marvel star Sebastian Stan will be playing a younger version of the presidential hopeful in the biopic of the former president, which will follow the life of Trump while in his late 30s and 40s, when he transitioned from being an important New Yorker to a well-liked celebrity.

In his early career, Mr Tump became known for his bullish personality, heralded as a media-savvy industrialist. He partied with Bill Clinton, was friends with Michael Jackson, published a best-selling book (The Art of the Deal, 1987) and was a regular at Studio 54.

The film, which is directed by Holy Spider's Ali Abbasi, premiered at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year.

What is it about?

The film will chart the younger Trump's rise to power as a businessman.

"The Apprentice is a dive into the underbelly of the American empire," the synopsis reads. "It charts a young Donald Trump’s ascent to power through a Faustian deal with the influential right-wing lawyer and political fixer Roy Cohn."

It is also tagged as "an exploration of power and ambition set in a world of corruption and deceit" and "a mentor-protegé story that charts the origins of an American dynasty".

"Filled with larger-than-life characters, it reveals the moral and human cost of a culture defined by winners and losers," the synopsis adds.

When is the UK release date?

The film will premier in the UK and Ireland on October 18, but its release date in the US is still uncertain with Trump’s legal team saying they are ready to “file a lawsuit” to address what they claim are “untrue elements” of the film.

Why is the film called The Apprentice?

Nearly two decades before he became the US President, Trump co-produced and hosted The Apprentice, a TV competition show in which players completed business-focused challenges in the hopes of winning a six-figure contract at one of his businesses (the UK version, hosted by Sir Alan Sugar, is a spin-off).

The film's title will also be referring back to Roy Cohn and Trump's relationship, as Cohn became a kind of mentor figure to the businessman.

Who is in in?

Sebastian Stan will play Trump, and it has been confirmed that Succession star Jeremy Strong will play his mentor, Roy Cohn. Marvel star Maria Bakalova will play Trump’s first wife Ivana Trump while Martin Donovan will play Trump’s dad Fred.

How can I watch?

The film is set to hit UK cinemas in October and will be available to buy on streaming platforms later on, although a streaming date is yet to be announced.
