Relaxed Chalmers in top shape at Olympic swim trials

A relaxed Kyle Chalmers says he's never been fitter and insists the pressure is off while chasing a slice of Olympic history.

Chalmers is aiming to become the first Australian man to win two Olympic 100m freestyle gold medals.

He won gold in the event at the 2016 Rio Olympics and took silver at the Tokyo Games of 2021 when pipped by six-hundredths of a second by American Caleb Dressel.

But the 25-year-old says if victory eludes him at the Paris Games starting next month, so be it.

"As you get older, I guess the pressure is off a little bit," Chalmers said after his initial swim at Australia's Olympic selection trials in Brisbane on Wednesday.

"I have kind of achieved everything I have set my mind to achieve in swimming so now I can just enjoy it and everything is a bonus.

"As you get older you don't have as many competitions to look forward to so I'm just slowing down and enjoying every little part of it."

Chalmers advanced into Wednesday night's 50m freestyle final after a heat swim he used as a "blowout" ahead of his 100m freestyle races on Thursday.

"I'm absolutely in the best shape I've ever been and just super relaxed," he said.

"It doesn't feel like an Olympic trials and everything is on the line ... it's nice.

"I'm staying with my girlfriend, my mum, my grandparents at an Airbnb.

"So just being able to escape back to them is keeping me very calm and relaxed."
