Reiss Nelson makes his mark as Arsenal batter Forest on title charge - 5 talking points

Arsenal's Premier League feelgood factor rolled on with a dominant win over Nottingham Forest.

Having suffered their first defeat of the season at PSV Eindhoven in the Europa League on Thursday, the Gunners roared into the lead when Gabriel Martinelli headed home a Bukayo Saka cross after five minutes.

Saka went off injured with an ankle problem in the first half, replaced by Reiss Nelson, and the wide man struck twice at the start of the second half to extend the advantage and bury a well-beaten Forest.

Thomas Partey fired home a fine fourth from distance, before skipper Martin Odegaard smashed a fifth as the Gunners returned to the top of the league.

Here are the game's main talking points.

Gabriel Martinelli deciding games, not just decorating them

Just as in Arsenal's last Premier League home game against Liverpool there was an early goal for Martinelli, and again it showcased how he's progressed as a footballer.

Against Jurgen Klopp's side earlier this month he showed a laser focus in front of goal as he drifted in from the left, and again here there was great off the ball movement as he knocked the ball out to Saka and then burst into the penalty area to head home the Englishman's cross.

That run from out to in is what we see from many of the great forwards in the modern game, those who come alive in the box and decide the biggest matches in the most clinical of ways.

Despite his wide starting position, something he stuck to here, Martinelli can be one of those players.

Bukayo Saka hands out a couple of concerns

If you didn't know we were there already, we've firmly entered the period of World Cup worry.

Saka will of course be desperate to make an impact for England in Qatar given what happened to him at the end of the Euros last year, but his participation, at least from the very start, of the upcoming tournament is suddenly in doubt.

The wide man made it clear that his priorities still lie with his club by trying to come back on after that ankle knock sustained in a challenge with Renan Lodi, but given the standard of opposition and state of the game ( Arsenal were 1-0 up) you have to wonder if it was worth it.

Gareth Southgate certainly will be.

Arsenal find their strength in depth

The main concern for Arsenal all season has been what happens when they rotate their squad and bring in less heralded players, and one win over Nottingham Forest doesn't change that of course.

It isn't so much the quality of some of those replacements which is the issue though, more the lack of experience, and so moments like Nelson's two-goal cameo are so important in building up the confidence of those on the fringes.

These were Nelson's first Premier League goals since a strike against Liverpool in the behind-closed-doors days of July 2020, his solitary top-flight strike until now, and they were welcome moments for a squad which have had established stars all season, and could do with one or two new ones emerging.

The Jesse Lingard Experiment

Remember why Jesse Lingard joined Nottingham Forest? It's no surprise if you don't.

One of the reasons for this great experiment was to get himself into World Cup contention, but right now he looks about as far away from the tournament as Scotland are.

Lingard was again awful here, and would have been anonymous were it not for a laughable shot that troubled the corner flag more than the back of the net. And how the home fans laughed.

Steve Cooper wasn't chuckling though, and he'll have to wonder if Lingard is a player suited to a relegation battle.

On and on it goes

Whatever you think will happen in the end, and the Premier League trophy is still very likely to keep its sky blue ribbons, there isn't a set of fans in the country who are enjoying themselves more than Arsenal supporters right now.

This was the latest in a growing number of magical afternoons, and one in which the destination of the points was never really in doubt despite a brief rally from Forest in the tail end of the second half.

Had they scored then you sense that Arsenal would have roared back though, and there is a real sense of positivity and verve about this side right now.

That, coupled with enormous talent, could take them very far.
