Australia's medical regulator has suspended the licence of Tasmania's award-winning chief psychiatrist, who has also held the role in several other states.
The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency said Dr Aaron Groves was suspended by the Medical Board of Australia on Monday, leaving him unable to practise.
"Due to privacy provisions in the national law, we cannot comment further," an AHPRA spokeswoman said on Friday.
Dr Groves, who was appointed to the role in September 2017, has previously been the chief psychiatrist in South Australia, Western Australia and Queensland.
He received the Royal Australian New Zealand College of Psychiatrists Margaret Tobin Award in May last year.
The award is given for significant contribution to administrative psychiatry, predominantly in the area of mental health in Australia and New Zealand over the preceding five years.
AHPRA says national boards have the power to suspend a practitioner's registration pending further investigation.
