Referee with colourful Leeds United history handed Crystal Palace game

The match officials for the 10th Premier League gameweek of the season have been appointed and Leeds United have been given Paul Tierney - a referee with a plenty of history with the Yorkshire club.

Leeds, as a club, have been increasingly vocal about the state of officiating within the PGMOL this season, with midfielder Adam Forshaw saying "most of the players" would get rid of VAR while manager Jesse Marsch was sent off for his outburst at Robert Jones during their 5-2 loss at Brentford. This past weekend also saw Stuart Attwell criticised by many supporters.

Tierney has been in the middle of numerous past controversies surrounding his performances and has come under fire from both managers and journalists.

One such flashpoint was April's 4-0 Elland Road defeat to Manchester City, in which the Sinday Mirror's Andy Dunn brought some of his decisions into question, citing the incident that saw Stuart Dallas suffer a broken leg for a tackle on Jack Grealish, an injury he is still recovering.

“Unfortunately, Dallas has been the aggressor in the infringement, yet another foul on Grealish," Dunn wrote in the Sunday Mirror. "Had referee Paul Tierney booked Dallas for one of his previous fouls on Grealish, he might not have lunged in again.

“But that was symbolic of Tierney’s shambolic performance. He lost control of this contest early on and never got it back.”

On the flipside, Tierney was the man in the middle of one of Leeds' most memorable wins in recent years - the final day win over Brentford last season that ensured Jesse Marsch kept their place in the Premier League.

Tierney has taken charge of 18 Leeds matches, with the Whites winning eight, losing nine and drawing one of them over the past 12 years. This includes all four of Leeds' matches against the two Manchester clubs last season, in which the Whites were soundly beaten in all of.

It's also worth noting that the referee from Leeds' match against Aston Villa over the weekend Stuart Attwell was not given a match to officiate this weekend after giving 35 fouls between both sides. He will be on VAR duty for the Brighton vs Tottenham Hotspur match.
