Reece James gives verdict on Graham Potter sacking as Todd Boehly faces key Chelsea decision

Chelsea defender Reece James has backed manager Graham Potter, claiming the side are together amid growing calls for a change in management. The Blues have just two wins in their last 15 matches, ramping up pressure on the management staff from all sides to earn results.

The current message from Todd Boehly and the board appears to be that of backing for the former Brighton man, though it remains to be seen how far their patience could be tested. Potter was defiant in his post-match press conference when it came to talk over his future, claiming he is only focused on the next match.

The manager told reporters after defeat to Tottenham: "My job isn’t to worry about that [his future] too much. I understand the question and where it comes from, but I have to try to focus on keeping on helping the team and supporting the players. I really like these players, they’re good lads. They want to do better and want to win. But at the moment we’re suffering and that is my responsibility."

While uncertainty rules over Potter, the need for short-term improvement is key to turning things around at Stamford Bridge. While fingers are being pointed at the manager, James was keen to highlight his quality after the game, claiming the players also have to improve.

The Cobham academy graduate told beINSports: "Everyone has seen how good of a manager he [Potter] is. That showed at Brighton when he was in and around the top four. His quality isn't questionable. He’s in a similar position to us players. As much stick he gets, we’re the ones playing. We’re in it together.”

It remains to be seen whether the Blues can turn things around, starting with a clash against Leeds United at the weekend before a key Champions League tie with Borussia Dortmund. However, the message of togetherness is one that appears to run from the top down through the club.
